5WM Class PAge
Read below to find out what is going on in 5WM this week
I may be a biased... but the kids in my classroom are the best! We ended our week with prayer as usual, but the kind, thoughtful prayers that are sent up by the kids are so heart-warming! Today we also did something different - we said a classroom cheer to end the week. It was so much fun :) I honestly couldn't have asked for a more rewarding career.
It was a funky week because Monday was a PD day, but we eventually got sorted around (by Friday). In Language Arts, students completed a comprehension test for their mid-year assessment. This mark will show up on report cards. We also finished up Haikus and learned about limericks. Limericks were so much fun, the students had a hoot and I got a good laugh listening to them! I was laughing so hard at one point that one of the kids said, "Mrs. Wall, you're crying!". Needless to say, we have a few students with creative poetry-writing skills. This upcoming week in Language Arts students will create acrostic poems and then decide on a favourite poem of theirs to read at our poetry slam. Students will learn about this as the week goes on. In math this past week, students continued to work on their floor plan in pairs. As mentioned last week, this was a tough project for students, but many enjoyed the challenge. It got them thinking outside of the box and using math in a real-life setting. Floor plans are due Tuesday. Next week we will discuss volume and measuring in liters and milliliters to finish off the unit. Thank you to the parents that came in and helped count money for Pizza day next week. We really appreciate the volunteer time you put in to make our lives easier. Have a great weekend! I look forward to working with your child again next week! Take care and God Bless :) I know I am always rambling about how time is flying, but seriously... January is basically over! I feel like it was just Christmas... wow!
It was another good week in grade 5! Students had a great time on the ski trip on Thursday. There were no serious injuries and (mostly) all of students came back tired, but smiling. It was a fun experience to tag along and see the students in a different element. We have some wicked skiers and boarders in our classroom! Last week in Language Arts, students finished up their concrete poems and we looked into Haikus. Students had time to create their own Haikus and they will be due this coming Thursday (Feb. 2). They had a lot of fun writing them! This week in Language Arts we will be talking about couplets, practice writing couplets, and we will also look into limericks. Students will be writing limericks this week as well! They will also be completing their mid-year comprehension test (can you believe the school year is already half-way finished?!). Last week in Math, we chatted about perimeter and area and practiced finding rectangles with given areas and perimeters. This was tricky for the students, so we will continue with this concept this coming week. Students will be creating a floor plan using given perimeters and areas to practice in a "real life" situation. We will also dive into volume and get some practice with terms such as millilitres and litres. Overall, it is going to be another busy week. I am away on Wednesday for a Math workshop, and the students will continue to work hard each day. Thanks for keeping up with our classroom! God Bless :) Well... another week has flown by in 5WM! On Monday, most students came into the classroom to discover a pleasant surprise with the new seating plan. For the most part, students have not been abusing their privileges to sit by their friends, so no one has had to move yet (yay)! On Wednesday morning we also had to privilege of being entertained by two university students- a percussionist and a pianist; what a treat!
In Language Arts this past week, we took some time to complete the 'Tell Them From Me' survey, where students were able to give their opinions about our school, teachers, and programs that we have running. They were also introduced to concrete poems on Tuesday and spent the majority of the week creating those. They will be displayed on our bulletin board as soon as they are marked- check it out if you happen to be in the school. Next week in Language Arts, students will learn about Haiku's and we will attempt to write one as a class. They will then have time to come up with their own Haiku. After that, students will get some practice writing couplets. In Math this past week, we finished up our Transformations unit with the unit test on Tuesday. In general, students didn't do as well with this unit, but there is a rewrite option available next Wednesday. We also began our measurement unit by discussing 90 degree angles and looking for them around the school. In addition, students had the opportunity to measure objects around the classroom and convert from centimeters to millimeters as well as meters. The conversions were a bit tricky, but we will continue to work on them as a class. This upcoming week in math, we will be discussing perimeter and area, and we will (hopefully) touch on measuring volume as well. As usual, I can't believe how fast time is flying by! This upcoming week, the Grade 6 students are participating in silent day, where they are not able to talk for a whole 24 hours! On Tuesday, our Safety Patrol members will be going to skate with the Hurricanes. On Wednesday, we have a Crusaders assembly and it is also Jersey day. Lastly, Thursday, we have the ski trip, which the students are very excited for! It is going to be a very busy week, but it should be another good one! Thanks for all of your support from home. God bless! :) |
