5WM Class PAge
Read below to find out what is going on in 5WM this week
I apologize for the late blog post! I have made it all the way through the school year so far without forgetting to post, but somehow on my last weekend in this contract, I forgot! Oh dear.. it must be time for a holiday! As I mentioned, this is (sadly) my last week teaching Grade 5... it has been a very strange/emotional week so far, but I feel very grateful that I have something to be emotional about!
Last week in LA, students spent a lot of time working on the good copies of their magazine articles. We also spent a lot of extra time practicing for Kiwana's festival, which the students did great in, by the way! This week in LA, students handed in their good copies and we have done some silent reading and word work after a busy schedule the last few weeks. Last week in Math, students continued to practice their multiplication strategies. We chatted about the doubling and halving strategy and students have completed many word and number problems to practice their strategy of choice. Tomorrow students write their unit test and I have confidence that they will all do well! I am sad to say that this is my last blog post on this page, but please know I have really enjoyed keeping you updated and giving you snap shots of what the grade 5s have been up to. I am so blessed to have started my teaching career off at this school and that is in large due to the wonderful student and parent community that has surrounded me. Thank you so much for all of your support and please know that I will miss your child very much! I plan to come back and visit the students at the VERY least, so this is not a "goodbye", but rather a "see you soon"! Thanks, take care, and God Bless :) Love, Jenn Wall It seems that Spring has finally sprung here in Lethbridge. I'm sure we will get at least one more dump of snow whether it is in this month or May... but I am happy that the bone-chilling temperatures are gone for a while now (or at least they should be...)! Once again we had a busy week at school. As staff, we had our Spiritual Development day on Monday which was a nice way to celebrate our faith as part of our job! As a class we also had a chance to finally enjoy our popcorn party on Thursday where the students watched, Bedtime Stories, and indulged in some Boom Chicka Pop popcorn.
In Language Arts last week, students received the (marked) rough copies of their articles back and went through the comments and suggestions I made for them. As a class we chatted about social vocabulary and compared it to academic vocabulary. The students also had a chance to write a compare and contrast article in pairs comparing Double Bubble to Hi Chews (which, of course, they loved because it involved eating candy and chewing gum). The students did awesome! We also got a chance to listen to a presentation from our School Resource Officer, Cst. Williamson, about Internet Safety, which was really well done. This upcoming week in Language Arts, Students will be working on the good copy of their articles and hopefully get them finished. They will also be writing a short letter to Mrs. Meyer welcoming her into the classroom and telling her about themselves. Last week in Math, students learned a new multiplication strategy called the split strategy. It is very similar to box multiplication, but the numbers are set up differently. We had a chance to practice that a little bit and do some "speed mathing", which is similar to speed dating, except there is no dating... just completing math questions and comparing your answer to your "date". The kids really enjoy it and it gives them an extra step to check their answer. This upcoming week in math students will learn the traditional method of doing double digit multiplication and get some practice with that. We will also dive into the doubling and halving method and students will practice that as well. As my time in the classroom is quickly coming to an end, I am really soaking in the time spent with my students. I am truly going to miss seeing their bright and shining faces each morning and hearing their fun stories every day. I will be sure to make the most of my last two weeks as the teacher in 5WM! Take care and have a safe week! God Bless. :) It has been another busy week at school! Students endured the first two classes of the sexual health unit, which went well (on the girls side at least). We also had fun at the St. Francis play, Shrek Jr., on Thursday! It's hard to believe that in a couple of years, that could be the kids in my classroom on that stage!
In Language Arts this week, students finished up the rough copy of their magazine articles and did some peer editing. I took the rough drafts in for marking rather than hassling the students to get their good copies in before Friday. These marks will be going on report cards and overall, most students did a good job, considering it was our first non-fiction writing assignment in grade 5. This upcoming week in LA, students will receive their rough copies back and go through their feedback so they know what changes to make for their good copies. From here, they will make the necessary changes and finish up the good copy of their magazine. They will also create a magazine cover, add photos, and pull everything together into one package. In Math last week, students practiced double digit multiplication and solved some problems in pairs. We did not get to the "split" strategy, but we will get to that on Tuesday. This upcoming week, students will work on the new strategy given to them and solve some more problems in small groups. Overall, it will be another fun week. Students finally earned their class popcorn party just before reading week and now we will finally have time to enjoy it. That will be happening on Thursday morning. Students are welcome to wear their PJs all day and bring a stuffy into the classroom for the movie. It should be a fun morning! Have a great week and God Bless! :) |
